Best Toys for 1 Year Old Boys

If you have a one year old, you know that their favorite toy changes several times a day. And most of the time, it isn’t even a toy that they’re playing with.

My baby loved to play with paper and socks. But there were a few toys that would catch his eye. I figured that part of the reason that he wasn’t playing with anything was because I didn’t own any of the best toys for 1 year old boys.

And I didn’t own any of the best toys for 1 year old boys because I had no idea what made a toy ideal for such an early age. So, I did a bit of research and came across these toys based on my criteria:

What Makes a Toy Suitable for a 1 year old?

With so many toys on the store shelves, how can you narrow them down accurately when looking for the best toys for 1 year old boys? There are a few things to keep an eye out for, which go as follows.

Visual Appeal

Have you ever noticed that your baby will reach for colorful items with plenty of parts and pieces instead of something bland? If you had only been in this world for one rotation around the sun, colors and moving pieces would seem exciting, don’t you think?

So, make sure that a toy you’re considering has something to offer visually. But there’s a fine line between visually stimulating and color overkill. If it gives you a headache, it’s sure to overstimulate your baby.

Develops Appropriate Skills

Not every toy needs to have a purpose but most should have at least a small element of educational value. Toys help babies understand concepts that are simple to us, like gravity and cause and effect.

So, evaluate each toy to see what they bring to the developmental table. Even simple blocks help babies develop motor skills, recognize the presence of different colors, and introduce gravity.

Safety

When it comes to the best toys for 1 year old boys, safety should be your number one priority. Look for small pieces, places where fingers can get pinched, and sharp corners. While it’s not as common as mothers worry about, choking is a real threat to young children. If there is a piece of a toy that concerns you, don’t take the risk.

What Should You Spend on a Toy for a 1 year old?

This is a question I struggled with myself. I didn’t want to look at only toys with low prices because I was worried about the quality. But I didn’t want to over pay because let’s be honest, a toy that made my son happy today might end up in the bottom of the toy chest tomorrow.

Through my research, I learned that there is no magic price point to look at. First, consider your budget. You should only be buying toys that you have the means to purchase. Don’t rely on credit cards to make your purchases. There are plenty of other necessities that come before toys.

But if you have the budget to go a bit crazy, remember that children, especially ones as young as a year old, don’t need many toys to make them happy. In fact, research shows that the more toys a child has, the less that they take care of them and appreciate them. Go ahead and set up that playroom but don’t make it your mission to fill every nook and cranny with toys.

Also, something I’ve tried to do is throw a little money in my son’s college fund whenever I buy him a toy. This makes me feel better about my purchase and makes me really think about where the money will do more good. If I end up not buying a toy, I go ahead and add that money to the college fund as well.

Quality vs quantity, amount not important.

My son loves rattles but the VTech Baby Rattle and Sing Puppy really captured his attention.

There’s plenty of colors and patterns to check out and the music button plays over 20 songs, sounds, and phrases, making this rattle superior to basic versions. My son especially loved playing with the crinkly ears.

My one issue with this rattle is that it requires batteries, but it wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining without the battery power. Children as young as three months will get a kick out of this rattle but it’s definitely one of the best toys for 1 year old boys.
